IN THE COMMUNITY
On April
2, 2005 DataLAN Systems in conjunction with Exceptional Parent magazine
and the Johnstown Chiefs sponsored Disability Awareness Night (DAN)
when the Johnstown Chiefs met the Dayton Bombers.
The purpose
of Disability Awareness Night is expanding awareness of the 54 million
Americans with disabilities. DAN highlights the extraordinary achievements
of people in the special needs community, as well as the perseverance
and dedication of the families, caregivers, healthcare providers
and teachers involved in their care and development. The presentation
of the EP Maxwell J. Schleifer Distinguished Service Award recognizes
the remarkable accomplishments of individuals living in and around
Johnstown.
2005 will mark
the fourth year of EP’s Disability Awareness Night (DAN) program.
The program began with pro baseball teams in 2002 at Yankee Stadium
in New York and Fenway Park in Boston . It grew to 14 teams in 2003,
and last year 26 out of 30 teams in the major league participated
in this unique, emotional and powerful program of recognition and
awareness. This year, the program has branched out into other sports
arenas, as EP will be holding recognition ceremonies at several
NBA games, in minor league baseball parks, at Grand Am GT Series
racing tracks and an ECHL hockey game with the Johnstown Chiefs.
